The Future of Journalism Studies in the Age of AI

2 June 2025
16:00 – 17:30
University Theatre, Nieuwe Doelenstraat 16, Amsterdam
Admission: free

How is artificial intelligence reshaping the field of journalism research? This panel brings together leading voices from across the globe to examine current approaches used to study AI and news, and to assess which methods are proving most productive—and which areas remain underexplored.

Against the backdrop of rapid advances in generative AI, panelists will reflect on the evolving relationship between AI and journalism as both a profession and a research domain. Topics include the ethics of chatbot-generated texts, algorithmic bias in news filtering, and how AI is influencing journalism education. While public discourse often frames AI’s influence on news media as inevitable, early academic findings suggest a more complex reality within newsrooms.

The panel features:

  • Tomás Dodds (moderator), Assistant Professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison and fellow at the Berkman Klein Center, IAS (UvA), and the AI, Media & Democracy Lab.

  • Seth Lewis, Professor and Director of Journalism at University of Oregon, and past Chair of ICA’s Journalism Studies Division.

  • Natali Helberger, Professor of Information Law at the UvA and co-lead of the Human(e) AI programme.

  • Nicolas Mattis, Postdoctoral Researcher at the UvA, focused on the interaction of technology, platforms, and democratic society.

  •

The event is organized in collaboration with the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences and the Faculty of Law at the University of Amsterdam.
