Tim Baarslag Appointed Professor of Mathematics of Cooperative AI at TU Eindhoven
AI has become central to modern society, gaining global attention for its success in image recognition, natural language processing, and medical diagnosis. Similarly, mathematical analysis has addressed diverse issues from transportation to investment strategies. The fusion of these fields, known as the Mathematics of Cooperative AI, seeks to develop a theory for intelligent joint decision-making. Tim Baarslag's new professorship at TU Eindhoven focuses on this emerging field.
Research Focus
Baarslag specializes in intelligent systems for collaborative decision-making, with applications in energy trading, IoT, trading platforms, autonomous vehicles, and digital security. His NWO Vidi-funded project, COMBINE, explores AI negotiation for coordinating multiple deals. His work is featured in leading publications like Science Magazine and MIT Technology Review.
Academic and Professional Background
Baarslag is also a Senior Researcher at CWI, Associate Professor at Utrecht University, and holds visiting positions at MIT, Nagoya University of Technology, and the University of Southampton. He earned his MSc and BSc (both cum laude) from Utrecht University and his PhD (cum laude) from Delft University of Technology in 2014. He previously held a Research Fellowship at the University of Southampton.
Awards and Contributions
Baarslag developed Genius, a negotiation platform, and organizes the International Automated Negotiating Agent Competition. He is a member of The Young Academy and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, serving on program committees for top AI conferences. His accolades include the Cor Baayen Young Researcher Award, with recognition from Elsevier, The Financial Daily, and New Scientist.
