DeepSeek Gives European AI Firms a Chance to Compete in the Global AI Race
DeepSeek has disrupted the AI market by offering companies access to advanced models at a fraction of the cost. German startup Novo AI switched within minutes, with CEO Hemanth Mandapati saying, “DeepSeek’s pricing was five times lower than OpenAI’s actual costs.” Analysts at Bernstein estimate that DeepSeek is up to 40 times cheaper than equivalent US models.
This could be a game-changer for European startups, which often struggle to secure AI investment compared to their US counterparts. Seena Rejal from NetMind.AI calls it “a major step in democratizing AI and leveling the playing field with Big Tech.”
However, concerns remain. European regulators are investigating whether DeepSeek may have copied OpenAI’s data or is censoring responses favorable to China. Large European firms are also questioning whether DeepSeek meets critical security certifications and integration standards.
With competition from OpenAI’s o1-reasoning model and China’s growing AI industry, the European AI sector faces crucial decisions ahead.
