Paul Groth on the Future of Data Science: A Conversation with UC Berkeley
"Data science is really becoming like the lingua franca for domains to talk to each other." In a recent episode of the UC Berkeley Data Science Education podcast, Paul Groth, Professor of Algorithmic Data Science and Director of the Data Science Centre at the University of Amsterdam, explores the interdisciplinary power of data science and its transformative role in education and research.
Groth discusses how the Netherlands pioneered AI education, offering undergraduate programs in AI long before data science became mainstream. He contrasts this with the U.S. model, where students typically specialize later in their academic journey.
At the UvA Data Science Centre, part of the University Library, the focus extends beyond tools and training. Through structured programmes and community initiatives, researchers from diverse fields come together to share knowledge, refine their skills, and explore novel applications of data science.
Data Science as a “Team Sport”

One of the key takeaways from the discussion is Groth’s perspective on data science as a collaborative effort:
- "You're never really doing data science on your own. You're always working in a team with product managers, end users, software engineers, and even salespeople. Understanding how to translate problems into data driven solutions is a fundamental principle in our approach to teaching and research." From AI and data science education structures to the role of scholarly publishing as structured data, the conversation provides deep insights into the evolving landscape of data science.
