The Future of Computing: Faster and More Sustainable
Andy Pimentel, professor of Parallel Computing Systems at the University of Amsterdam’s Informatics Institute, is tackling two pressing challenges in computing: speed and sustainability. As innovations in AI and data analytics drive demand for faster systems, the environmental impact of energy consumption has become a critical issue.
Pimentel’s research focuses on optimizing embedded computer systems found in devices like smartphones and advanced chip machines. Using technological models, his team aims to enhance performance while reducing energy use. One of their key projects, Energy Labels, seeks to map the energy consumption of digital processes like video calls. By providing users with an energy label—such as upgrading from “C” to “A” by switching services—the project empowers more sustainable choices.
Optimizing systems is also essential for advancing AI. Pimentel’s group is developing methods to execute large neural networks on small, local systems, enabling AI functionality even without internet connectivity—crucial for applications like self-driving cars.
The team uses models and algorithms inspired by nature, such as genetic processes and ant behavior, to balance trade-offs like speed and energy use. This innovative approach is paving the way for a future where technology is both powerful and environmentally responsible.
