AI Tool to Help Prevent Falls Among Elderly

Leonie Westerbeek, a researcher at the University of Amsterdam, is leading a project that uses AI to help elderly patients reduce their fall risk. Her doctoral research focuses on a system that advises seniors on how to manage medication-related risks, which are the leading cause of falls among this age group.

The AI system predicts a patient’s fall risk over the next year and provides medical recommendations for medication adjustments. Additionally, a patient portal gives seniors access to fall-risk information and a list of questions to discuss with their doctor.

Westerbeek believes the system could significantly improve patient satisfaction and reduce uncertainty during doctor consultations, ultimately leading to safer, more informed healthcare decisions.
